How to Comment on Reddit Without Getting Banned
Getting banned on Reddit rarely comes out of nowhere. It usually follows a pattern: a new account, too much volume, the same message everywhere, or ignoring a community's rules. Avoid those and most problems go away.
The three kinds of ban
- Subreddit bans: a moderator blocks you from one community, usually for breaking its rules.
- Shadowbans and filtering: your comments look normal to you but are hidden from everyone else, often because of spam signals.
- Account suspensions: Reddit itself suspends the account for breaking site-wide rules.
What triggers them
- New accounts posting a lot right away, especially with links.
- Identical or near-identical comments across many threads or subreddits.
- Comments that don't respond to the post, or that only promote.
- Ignoring a subreddit's rules on self-promotion, links, or account age and karma.
- Vote manipulation: asking for upvotes, or using several accounts to upvote each other.
Habits that keep an account healthy
- Warm up new accounts slowly. Low volume for the first few days, then increase gradually.
- Write comments that answer the specific question. If it could be pasted anywhere, it's too generic.
- Keep links rare and only when they genuinely help.
- Spread activity out through the day instead of posting in bursts.
- Read each subreddit's rules before commenting there.
- Never upvote your own content from other accounts.
How redditbot.dev helps
redditbot.dev is built around these habits. New accounts start in a warm-up mode for 3 days at reduced volume. Every campaign has a daily limit and active hours. Each comment is drafted from the actual post title and body, so replies are specific rather than copy-pasted. If an account's login fails or it looks suspended, the dashboard flags it so you can pause it.
If you do get banned
For a subreddit ban, read the ban message and, if appropriate, reply politely to the moderators. Don't create a new account to get around it, which breaks Reddit's rules. For a suspected shadowban, pause the account and check it from a logged-out browser. For a suspension, use Reddit's appeal process.
No tool can guarantee an account will never be flagged. The best protection is still relevant, helpful comments in communities that welcome them.
